The pigmy hippopotamus of Liberia and the adjacent parts of theWest Coast, measures only about 6 feet in length, and has habitsapproaching those of a pig. The European wild boar is a large coarse-haired species usuallywith an under-coat of woolly fur, no warts on the face, and standingfrom about 33 to $6 inches at the shoulder. It often lacks the crestor mane of long black bristles running from the nape down the backin its Indian cousin. Hungarian and Russian wild swine represent arace (S. scrofa attild) distinguished by its large size ; and several otherlocal races have been named.
