Hoffman, coroner of Cook County: During the trying hours of the Eastlanddisaster there were nuiny of our esteemed citi-zens who rendered valuable service in rescuingthe lives of the Eastland j)assengers and assistedin taking care of the dead and aiding in theidentification thereof. From the beginning oftime man never engaged in a more noble pur-pose than that of prolonging, protecting andsaving the lives of his fellows.Text Appearing After Image:.NLW KOUXDHOUtJE TRACKS ATROBEY STREET I have no way of compensating the hundredsof good citizens who rendered valuable ser-vice except to thank them from the bottom ofmy heart. However, I take the liberty of pre-senting to you this little star, bearing a cut ofthe passenger steamship Eastland and an in-scription reading, Valued Service Rendered.I trust that you will accept this little token,not for its intrinsic value, but in memory of thisterrible disaster, which teaches us the lessonof Safety First and of extending to our fellow-man kindness, courtesy and consideration. The Safety Commission of Chicago and CookCounty, of which Coroner HofTman is one ofthe leading spirits, is a mighty live organiza-tion, and it is a pleasure to know that someof our Chicago Baltimore and Ohio men areactively associated with it.
